Before turning to fiction, Stephen established himself as a groundbreaking documentarian. His acclaimed feature films Mumia: Long Distance Revolutionary and One Bright Shining Moment: The Forgotten Summer of George McGoverncaptivated audiences around the world, offering searing insights into politics, justice, and the human spirit. He also collaborated with Academy Award winner Alex Gibney as producer on Gonzo: The Life & Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson and Ken Kesey’s Magic Trip, further cementing his reputation for cinematic storytelling with cultural impact.

In the literary world, Stephen co-authored the acclaimed nonfiction trilogy Murder Incorporated: Empire, Genocide, and Manifest Destiny with journalist Mumia Abu-Jamal, featuring forewords by Angela Davis and Chris Hedges—a series praised for its deep examination of America’s historical and moral landscape.
