Some places stay with us long after we've left them. Others slowly become part of who we are. For S.P. Venkata, life exists somewhere between the pull of Chicago and the rugged beauty of the American Southwest, with an Indian identity that remains firmly rooted at the center of it all.

After leaving the Windy City for the Southwest, S.P. found himself drawn to a landscape of mountains, deserts, long days, and sharp cactus thorns. Yet Chicago still calls to him—the cold lakeside breezes and memories of a city where he left a piece of his heart.

It is within those contrasts that S.P. finds inspiration. Life, love, loss, memory, culture, and place become part of the inkwell from which he draws, shaped by the different worlds that have become part of his journey.

He describes himself as someone who has learned to live like an American and think like a cowboy while knowing, without question, that he remains one hundred percent Indian. It is a perspective that speaks to the complicated ways people carry their histories with them while discovering new places to call home.

Visitors to Scottsdale Book Festival 2027 will have the opportunity to meet S.P. Venkata, discover his work, and connect with an author whose story reflects the places, memories, and identities that shape the lives we build.

About S.P. Venkata

He left his heart in Chicago and has moved to the US Southwest. Mountains and deserts beckon to him with the sharp lure of a cactus. At the same time, he feels the Windy City tugging at him. Though he sometimes pines for the frigid chill of a lakeside breeze, he succumbs to the embrace of the long days, and the longer thorns, of the desert country. What's he to do then, but take the longest thorn, and dip it into the deepest inkwell of his life, loves, losses and memmories... He has learned to live like an American and to think like a cowboy. But he surely knows that he is one hundred percent Indian.
