For some creators, a love of comics begins with a single issue that sparks a lifetime of imagination. For Matthew Solberg, that passion eventually grew into building one of the Southwest's most recognized pop culture conventions before creating original comic book stories of his own.

As the founder and CEO of Phoenix Fan Fusion, Matthew has spent more than two decades helping bring together creators, artists, writers, and fans from across the country. Since founding the convention in 2002, it has grown into the largest pop culture convention in the Southwest, creating a home for comics, science fiction, fantasy, gaming, animation, and pop culture enthusiasts.

Inspired by the excitement he felt as a child receiving his very first comic book subscription in the mail, Matthew went on to found Mascot Comics, where he serves as Founder, CEO, Publisher, and writer. Through titles including The Adventures of Sunset and Meteor, he continues creating original stories and characters that capture the imagination and sense of adventure that first drew him to comics decades ago.

Working alongside creators Travis Hanson, Anthony Jude Hernandez, and Valentino Moreira, Matthew has helped develop the growing universe of Mascot Comics while continuing to champion independent comic book storytelling.

Visitors to Scottsdale Book Festival 2027 will have the opportunity to meet Matthew, discover Mascot Comics, and connect with a creator whose lifelong passion for comics has inspired both a thriving creative community and original stories of his own.
